2021 Merchant Navy Day

The Red Ensign will fly aloft the Parish War Memorial flagpole throughout the week to commemorate the sacrifice and contribution made by sailors of the British Merchant Fleet. Once again, our annual commemorative service was graced by the presence of Blackmore resident Ron Quested who survived the perils of the Atlantic Convoys that kept the country supplied with vital food and equipment to help win WWll.

St Laurence Priory Church Lay Minister Gail Hughes led a short service at The Green with Mr. Quested adding the solemnity of displaying the ceremonial Red Ensign — including a poignant lowering it to the ground in remembrance of fallen comrades.

Also pictured are Mr. Quested’s teenage granddaughter Emma  (with Gail) and Ron with his daughter Leanne,.  The Parish Council and representatives of local groups were also in attendance for the service held with restricted numbers due to covid-19.
